Hot Chocolate Triple Chocolate Chip Cookies...and a New Year's Wish!

After being blasted with 20 inches of snow earlier this week, I just had to pull this recipe out of the reserves even though I already blogged about the "perfect" chocolate chip cookie just a couple months ago.  We are only ten days into winter and all I've wanted to do is hibernate with lots of hot soup, tea, and hot chocolate!

Just a word of caution if you plan on making this cookie - as the name suggests, it is loaded with lots of sugar and lots of chocolate.  I actually cringed when I was reading over the recipe and realized it required nearly 2 cups of sugars, 4 packs of hot chocolate (which already has sugar) and 3 cups of different kinds of chocolate chips! My teeth hurt just thinking about it... I contemplated replacing one of the cups of chips with some pecans to maybe break up the sweetness a little bit but decided to make them as is just so I would have an "original" to compare against if I decided to try this recipe again.

When the first batch came out, I let the cookies cool for about 5 minutes and tried one while it was still warm (who doesn't love a warm chocolate chip cookie??).  Oh my... I wish I had a better reaction, but the cookie was just too sweet for my Asian tastebuds.  I knew that some of the sweetness would subside when the cookie cooled completely so I reserved my final opinion for later.

I'm not sure how the cookies would've been done in 11 minutes using a 1/4 cup scoop of dough (that's one huge cookie!) according to the original recipe since my first batch came out a little too gooey in the center for my liking (I used a mini-ice cream scoop).  So I decided to bake the remaining batches for 15 minutes so they were more done in the middle.  In the end, these cookies are still sweeter than I'd like, but after tasting them completely cooled I can say that a hint of saltiness came through to contrast with the sweetness which made the cookie much more satisfying... though I'm not really sure I taste the hot chocolate flavor but it's certainly chocolatey enough!

This cookie gets an enthusiastic two thumbs up from my chocolate-loving hubs!

Hot Chocolate Triple Chocolate Chip Cookies (I tweaked the name a bit so you would know what you're getting into)

  • 2 sticks Salted Butter- At Room Temperature
  • 1 cup White Granulated Sugar (I Like Baker's)
  • ⅔ cups Packed Light Brown Sugar
  • 2 whole Large Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Pure Vanilla
  • 3-¼ cups All-purpose Flour
  • 4 packages (1 Oz. Packets, NOT Sugar-free) Hot Chocolate Mix
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1-¼ teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1 cup Each White, Milk, And Semi-sweet Chocolate Chips


Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Cream butter and sugars until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla until combined. In a separate bowl, combine flour, hot chocolate mix, salt and baking soda. Add to wet ingredients in 3 to 4 parts, making sure all is incorporated. Fold in chips. Chill the dough for an hour or so. [sillianah note: I didn't do this - I just chilled each batch for 10-15 min while another batch was in the oven] Use a 1/4 cup as a scoop to scoop dough onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Bake for 9-11 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Let cool for 5 minutes before removing from pan.
