The Weekly Bloom #6
A weekly photo series sharing glimpses of beauty from my garden to start the week.
It’s approaching mid-August, still 90 degrees and sunny; the garden is loving it - me, not so much.
BUT, flower stems are lengthening + the blooms are noticeably larger/fuller and drawing in the pollinators! Over the weekend, I was crouching at the end of this bed of zinderella peach zinnias when I heard the familiar drone of a ruby-throated hummingbird approaching. She came within arm's length of me - so close that I felt the gust of air from her flapping wings! I slowly lifted my head to say hello, and she hovered over the zinnias, looking at me for a few seconds before taking off again. What a magical moment!
These Tip Top Blush Pink nasturtiums are finally blooming - I direct sowed them over 60 days ago, they stayed tiny for so long I wasn’t sure if they’d ever bloom….the blush pink is quite subtle, not sure it was worth the wait. This is also a smaller, non-trailing variety (Tropaeolum minus) so it stays pretty compact.
Also in bloom, butterfly pea flowers! Well, one flower. I direct-sowed a bunch of seeds into the ground, but only two survived. I expected the plants to climb up the trellis arch before flowering started, but nope, it’s still pretty low to the ground so I almost didn’t see this beautiful bloom! Hopefully, it’ll pump out a few more blooms so I can save them to make tea.
This week’s bouquet: ballerina zinnias, calendula zeolights, zinderella peach zinnias, dwarf strawflowers, ageratum, celosia…AND this guy:
I can’t believe this lil guy has been living in the zinnia, for an entire week in my home! Just discovered today, while I was throwing away some of the wilted stems from the bouquet. I relocated him to a potted plant outside on my balcony. Sorry lil fella!
